Summer Experiential Workshop

The Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling offers a Summer Experiential Workshop. This unique workshop combines lectures, field trips, discussion and patient experiences to provide the participants with a broader view of the genetic counseling profession in preparation for graduate school. We accept approximately 20 students each summer for the one-week workshop.

Topics addressed during the workshop include:

  • What it’s like to be a genetic counseling graduate student
  • Firsthand experiences of genetic counselors
  • Thesis development
  • Ethical and cultural issues
  • Patient experiences
  • Disabilities and illness
  • Alternative careers for genetic counselors
  • Public health and current issues in genetic counseling
  • Preparing your application to graduate school and next steps

In addition, the students will tour facilities for individuals with disabilities or chronic illness. Chicago-area genetic counselors serve as faculty, giving participants exposure to professionals with a range of experience from across the country who work in varied specialties.

Requirements

Due to the large number of applications we receive, we will only be accepting applications of individuals who have completed their sophomore year of college by the time the workshop is held and who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The primary goal of the workshop is to provide an opportunity for individuals to become more familiar with the profession; therefore, we will prioritize individuals who are located in an area that may have limited opportunities to shadow or interact with a genetic counselor. If you are not accepted into the workshop, this has no reflection on your ability to gain acceptance into the Northwestern Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling.

There is no tuition for the workshop. However, participants are responsible for all costs associated with travel, accommodations and meals.

Deadlines and Dates

Due to the uncertainty of the impact of COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Summer 2020 Experiential Workshop. Please check this webpage for additional opportunities to learn more about the genetic counseling profession including helpful information for applicants considering graduate school for genetic counseling.
