Science in Society

Science in Society (SiS) is Northwestern University's science outreach e-magazine. Through articles, videos, events, and blogs, SiS brings the exciting research and perspectives of Northwestern faculty, staff and students to the community.

Site highlights include:

  • The Science in Society Blog, launched in February 2009, which offers thoughts from the Northwestern academic community on a wide range of topics, from research in their labs, to experiences in the classroom, to recent headlines and discoveries.
  • Quarterly Feature Article sets, which explore the scientific and societal aspects of a given topic. This quarter’s issue spotlights the past, present, and future of physics research. Big Ideas, Small Particles, by André de Gouvêa, Ian Low, and Tim Tait, all physics and astronomy faculty in the Weinberg College, explains how physicists, including those at Northwestern, will use the new Large Hadron Collider to better understand our universe. The companion article, From a Physicist’s Mind, by Heidi Schellman, also of physics and astronomy, explores how physics research has led to technology with major societal impacts, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the World Wide Web.
  • The event listing, which provides a snapshot of the exciting lectures, workshops, and exhibits sponsored by University groups every week. All events featured on the site are open to the public.
