Rex L. Chisholm, Ph.D., is the director of the Center of
Genetic Medicine, a partnership between Northwestern University, Northwestern
Memorial Hospital, Children’s Memorial Hospital and Evanston Northwestern
Healthcare that facilitates the development of new genetic knowledge and its
application to medicine. Dr. Chisholm is also the Adam & Richard T. Lind
Professor of Medical Genetics, and his research program uses genetic and molecular
genetic approaches to investigate the fundamental process of cell motility.
Marta Gwinn, M.D., M.P.H., is a medical epidemiologist
and the associate director of epidemiology at the National Office of Public
Health Genomics (NOPHG), CDC. She currently leads NOPHG’s Knowledge
Integration Team, which promotes using the tools of human genome epidemiology
to translate genomic research results into information for clinical and public
health applications.
Amalia M. Issa, M.P.H., Ph. D., is the director of the Program
in Personalized Medicine and Targeted Therapeutics at the Abramson Center
for the Future of Health (a joint initiative of The Methodist Hospital Research
Institute and the University of Houston) and associate professor at the University
of Houston. She is a pharmacologist and clinical epidemiologist with primary
interests in how basic and clinical pharmaceutical sciences are translated
into clinical research and practice and health policy.
Gerardo Jimenez-Sanchez, M.D., Ph.D., is the director general
of the National Institute of Genomic Medicine in Mexico and professor of genomic
medicine at the National University of Autonomous of Mexico. Dr. Jimenez-Sanchez
is also the principal investigator in the extensive haplotype map project
based on the entire Mexican population and the founding president of the Mexican
Society of Genomic Medicine.
Thane Kreiner, Ph.D., is the senior vice president of marketing
and sales at Affymetrix, Inc., a leading manufacturer of DNA microarray technology.
Prior to his current position, Dr. Kreiner held various other management positions
at Affymetrix from 1994 to 2000, which has been integral to the development
of the Company's technology and scale-up of its commercial operations.
Michele Lloyd-Puryear, M.D., Ph.D., is the chief of the
genetic services branch of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Department
of Health and Human Services. In addition to being a board-certified pediatrician,
she is actively involved in teaching both medical students and pediatric residents
in community health sites as an assistant clinical professor at Georgetown
University School of Medicine.
Pilar Ossorio Ph.D., J. D., is associate professor of law
and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and program faculty
in the Graduate Program in Population Health at the UW. Prior to taking her
position at UW, she was director of the genetics section at the Institute
for Ethics at the American Medical Association, and taught as an adjunct faculty
member at the University of Chicago Law School.
Daniel Perry, a former journalist and Capitol Hill staffer,
Mr. Perry is the founding executive director of the not-for-profit Alliance
for Aging Research in Washington, DC. He is an in-demand speaker on aging,
longevity science and public policy and is widely published on these issues.
In recent years he has led large coalitions organized for patient-centered
health care, accelerated Alzheimer’s drug development, and human stem
cell research.
Kevin A. Schulman, MD, is professor of medicine in the Duke University School of Medicine, where he also serves as director of the Center for Clinical and Genetic Economics in the Duke Clinical Research Institute. He holds a joint appointment as professor of management in Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, where he is director of the Health Sector Management Program
Maureen Smith, MSC, is the clinical director for the NUgene Project, a hospital-based
genetic banking study in the Center for Genetic Medicine at Northwestern University.
She has over 14 years of genetic counseling experience in the areas of prenatal,
pediatric, adult and cancer genetics.
Brian Spear, Ph.D., is research director within Abbott’s
Global Pharmaceutical Research and Development with responsibility for genomics,
pharmacogenetics, cell and molecular toxicology, proteomics, and bioinformatics.
He has held positions at the University of Colorado and Northwestern University
and carried out research in chromosome structure and genome organization.
Robert Mittman, MPP, (moderator), is an experienced forecaster,
consultant and facilitator who combines deep knowledge of several industries,
including health care, energy, and technology with an engaging facilitation
style. He is the founder of Facilitation, Foresight, Strategy, a strategy
consultancy.
