Research Interests

Dr. Holmgren’s research group studies the process of pattern formation. In particular they are focused on the Hedgehog signal transduction pathway and its regulation of cell fate specification. His laboratory’s present goals are to understand how the signal is relayed from the cell surface to the Ci signaling complex, how the components of this signaling complex regulate various aspects of Ci function, and how Ci acts in conjunction with other transcription factors to regulate the expression of target genes.

All of this work makes extensive use of genetic approaches. Dr. Holmgren and his researchers are using reverse genetics to identify new components of the pathway, genetic epistasis and mosaic analysis to study the function of the components, and transgenic approaches to carry out structure/function experiments.
