Research Interests
Dr. Erwin Goldberg is using genetics and molecular genetic approaches to understand
the regulation of male spermatogenesis. The two main approaches at present
involve transgenes for ectopic expression of stage specific genes and targeted
disruption of testis specific genes. For example, the ldhc gene is expressed
exclusively in pachytene primary spermatocytes. The ldhc promoter has been
used to express the testis specific isoform of calpastatin as a transgene
in pachytene cells. Dr. Goldberg’s lab is studying the resulting phenotype.
Future plans include microarray analyses to study changes in gene expression
in cells in which spermatogenesis has been disrupted by hormonal perturbations.
