Research Interests
Dr. Wolinsky’s
research has provided an evolutionary perspective for RNA virus population
dynamics in vivo. This work has significant implications for understanding
the basic biology of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection relevant
to the rational clinical management of HIV disease. Seminal studies have documented
the selective transmission of HIV from mother to child, the evolutionary dynamics
exhibited by HIV populations under natural selection, selection events by
the immune response associated with HIV progression, and the likely time of
the origin of the AIDS epidemic. This research has provided a fundamental
understanding of the factors that affect HIV infection and the rate of disease
progression, knowledge critical to the development of effective vaccine and
treatment strategies.
Dr. Wolinsky is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has been elected to a number of other scientific organizations. He has received several research grants from the NIH, and is chair of an NIH research study section.
