Spring 2009 CGM Travel Fellowship Award Winner Profiles

published on Monday, November 2, 2009

The CGM Travel Fellowship competition awards exceptional graduate students and postdoctoral fellows a $500 travel stipend to present the results of their genetics-based research at scientific conferences across the country. The fellowship was established to help defray the costs of attending and traveling to these meetings, where Northwestern students network and share their findings with other scientific professionals. Below are the spring 2009 recipients.

Darja Bamming, “Molecular Studies of RNA Helicase Mediated Innate Immunity,” presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Virology (ASV), July 14, 2009, at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Bamming had a valuable experience meeting peers in her field and presenting in front of an international audience. She was especially inspired by research presentations on new cutting-edge techniques. Advisor: Curt M. Horvath, professor of biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology, Weinberg College.

Robert Harmon, “Desmoglein 1 interacts with Erbin: a putative mechanism for Inhibiting Erk signaling during epidermal differentiation and morphogenesis,” presented at the Society for Investigative Dermatology (SID) 69th Annual Meeting, May 6-9, 2009, in Montreal. Advisor: Kathleen Green, Joseph L. Mayberry Professor of Medicine, Division of Pathology, Feinberg School.

Ryan Hobbs, “SERCA2, the intracellular calcium pump targeted in Darier’s disease, is necessary for proper regulation of PKC signaling, keratin organization and desmosome assembly” presented at the Society for Investigative Dermatology (SID) 69th Annual Meeting, May 6-9, 2009, in Montreal. Hobbs had the opportunity to interact with the numerous researchers at the conference, including conversations regarding post-doctoral opportunities. Advisor: Kathleen Green, Joseph L. Mayberry Professor of Medicine, Division of Pathology, Feinberg School.

Kristina Kligys, PhD, “α6 integrin supports keratinocyte motility,” presented at the Society for Investigative Dermatology (SID) 69th Annual Meeting, May 6-9, 2009, in Montreal. Advisor: Jonathan Jones, professor of cell and molecular biology, Feinberg School.

The researchers mentioned above, as well as other winners from the 08-09 year, were honored by their peers and faculty at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University’s Annual Posters and Wine Session in June.

All graduate and postdoctoral fellows who are participating in genetics-based research at the University are encouraged to apply for upcoming CGM Travel Fellowship awards. The next deadline is Friday, November 6, 2009. Click here for more information and application details.
