Syamal Datta, MD
Professor of Medicine & Microbiology-Immunology
Solovy Arthritis Research Society Professor
Feinberg School of Medicine
Research Interests:
Dr. Datta is an Immunologist, working on the basic mechanisms of systemic autoimmunity (Lupus) and developing targeted therapy for the disease with immunoregulatory peptides he has identified. He has conducted genetic studies segregating endogenous retrovirus gene loci from lupus susceptibility, and in collaboration with Professor Chandra Mohan at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, mapping lupus susceptibility regions by whole genome scans in SNF1 mouse model of lupus he developed. He has been analyzing differential gene expression patterns in human lupus T cells that might be associated with hyper-expression of CD40 ligand, lowered activation threshold, resistance to anergy and activation induced apoptosis.
