Core Facilities

State-of-the-art equipment, the latest technologies, and expert technical advice are available to researchers at Northwestern and other institutions in the Chicago metropolitan area through the Center for Genetic Medicine's Core Facilities.

Genomics Core Facility- The Genomics Core offers a wide range of sequencing, genotyping, and gene expression profiling services to investigators throughout Northwestern University as well as external researchers. The Core is home to a multitude of the latest equipment, including the recently acquired SOLiD System, a next-generation sequencer from Applied Biosystems.

NUgene- One of the first large-scale genetic banking projects in the country, NUgene seeks to increase the understanding of genetic mechanisms underlying common diseases, assist in the development of DNA-based technology for diagnosis and treatment of disease, and aid physicians and other health-care providers in the application of genetics to the practice of medicine.

Transgenic and Targeted Mutagenesis Facility- The Transgenic and Targeted Mutagenesis (TTML) Core provides a comprehensive range of services to both Northwestern and non-Northwestern researchers, including generation of transgenic mice, gene targeting of embryonic stem (ES) cells, ES cell microinjection into blastocysts, cryopreservation/recovery of mouse embryos, and rederivation of pathogen-free mouse strains.
